Staying in Athens, Greece and What to Bring

Athens: The founding of Athens dates back to over 3,400 years ago. Athens is considered the city where democracy was founded and implemented within Greek Society. Its famous landmarks such as the Acropolis, are original and have never been rebuilt as is common in many European cities.

Language: The official language of Athens is Greek. You will find that English is widely spoken in Athens but there are a few instances where English will not be understood: grocery and other store clerks/shopkeepers, tram/bus drivers and inspectors, police, banks, etc. Most restaurant and pub staff in the center will speak English.

Meals: Greek cuisine or Mediterranean diet is considered one of the healthiest cuisine in the world. If you do not eat meat, you can find vegetarian options on every menu. If you do not eat pork, other meat options are available. If you order soup, make sure the broth is not pork based. There are a wide variety of non-Greek restaurants throughout Athens. More information will be provided in the detailed admissions packet.

Weather: Summer in Athens is sunny and hot. . We advise to check the weather before arriving in order to pack accordingly. Click on the link for the most up to date weather forecast.

Athens Public Transportation App: This link will provide you with accurate information about the Athens transportation system which is considered one of Europe’s most reliable systems. There is link to its Apple or Google app for your mobile device.

What to Bring to The Neptune Academy

Clothes: Classroom dress should be respectful; bring at least one business/business casual outfit for special events. Athens’s streets are mostly flat but can be uncomfortable at times- pack durable but comfortable shoes; outdoor weather jacket/umbrella; long sleeve shirt/sweatshirt for cool days or nights. The rest is up to you.

Towels: If you like large towels, please bring one or two as Athens towels tend to be smaller but on par with European sized towels.
